We need them to balance out all those ones that we are expected to win but ending up losing…. We did come close and who knows what might have happened if Anthony hadn’t had to stagger off. Reid and Rocca out again to serious injuries. Any tall forwards anywhere?? This will cause another shuffle and place more Pressure on Travis Cloke. I hope young Trav is up to it now he’s back. At least we stopped the Bulldogs run of 100+ scores
Match Results

Sunday, June 22, 2008
Docklands, 4.40pm AEST; Roof: closed; crowd: 44,885
Conditions: Good
Weather: 13C; outside cloudy, chance of a shower

1/4 time
1/2 time
3/4 time
Final

COL
1.3-9
6.8-44 (10)
11.9-75
13.11-89

WB
2.2-14 (5)
5.4-34
12.5-77 (2)
15.9-99 (10)

Goals: West.B'dogs: Mitch Hahn 3, Robert Murphy 3, Scott Welsh 2, Brad Johnson 2, Lindsay Gilbee, Nathan Eagleton, Ryan Griffen, Jason Akermanis, Will Minson. Collingwood: Paul Medhurst 2, Scott Burns 2, Cameron Wood 2, Dane Swan 2, Scott Pendlebury, Rhyce Shaw, Anthony Rocca, Chris Bryan. This was the first loss that i watched on (free-to-air) TV as well. I can’t believe we were up by 25 points mid-way through the third quarter and looked home and ended up 30 points behind at the end.. Brendan Fevola proves how much of a dickhead he is again and looks to have takedn the Top Penalty-Milker award from Matthew Lloyd as well. Carlton had the run of the whistle, that’s for sure.. I’m still wondering how Brad Fisher was pushed in the back in a marking contest in the goal-square without a player touching him. or how Paul Medhurst pushed an opponent in the back when he was facing him, again in the goal-square. these is just two examples of a litany of bungles… and now the perennial cellar-dwellers are in the bloody 8!!
Match Result

Sunday, June 15, 2008
MCG, 2.10pm AEST, crowd: 80,310
Conditions: Fair, following recent rains
Weather: 14C, overcast, occasional sunshine

1/4 time
1/2 time
3/4 time
Final

COL
1.4-10
5.8-38 (10)
9.13-67 (–)
12.17-89

CAR
2.7-19 (9)
3.10-28
9.13-67 (–)
17.17-119 (30)

Goals: Carlton: Brendan Fevola 8.6, Heath Scotland 2, Jarred Waite 2, Dennis Armfield, Brad Fisher, Nick Stevens, Bret Thornton, Simon Wiggins. Collingwood: Paul Medhurst 4, Dane Swan 2, Scott Burns, Travis Cloke, Leon Davis, Tarkyn Lockyer, Shane O'Bree, Dale Thomas.
Best: Carlton: Brendan Fevola, Marc Murphy, Andrew Carrazzo, Heath Scotland, Bryce Gibbs, Chris Judd. Collingwood: Dane Swan, Paul Medhurst, Rhyce Shaw, Shane O'Bree, Travis Cloke.
Umpires: Jeff Farmer, Hayden Kennedy, Justin Schmitt.
Report:
Travis Cloke was cited with a Level Two striking offence against Michael Jamison (Car) in Q1. The incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), low impact (one point), and high contact (two points), a total of five activation points drawing a Level Two offence, 125 demerit points and a two-match suspension. Fortunately, the boys found their accuracy and stopped indiscriminately bomobing onto the Forward 50 and started tohit targets and ended up with the Chocolates..
NAB Rising Star

Round 10 – Nathan Brown (Collingwood)
Collingwood key defender Nathan J Brown has been rewarded for negating some of the best power forwards in the AFL by earning the round 10 nomination for the Rising Star award.
Brown, 19, has been handed the big jobs on Matthew Pavlich, Jonathon Brown, Matthew Richardson, Lance Franklin, Matthew Lloyd and Brendan Fevola this season and handed himself with aplomb.
And last Saturday at the MCG, he kept promising West Coast youngster Josh Kennedy to one goal as the Magpies won by 100 points.
Brown spent all of his debut season in 2007 playing with the Magpies' then-VFL affiliates Williamstown.
He made his senior debut in round one this year.
Brown was an elite junior basketballer, who didn't seriously pursue Australian football until he was 16.
He was taken by Collingwood with pick No.10 in the 2006 national draft.
"Throughout the season Nathan has been getting better and better, he's just been a revelation for us this year," said Magpies coach Mick Malthouse
About bloody time too.. He has played on the creme-de-la-creme of Full-forwards and rendered them mostly ineffective. this is stunning for a first-year player and should be much. It'll be fantastic to see him grow more into the role...
The Month of May

In Round 10 a total of 4 matches were decided by a team which won all 4 quarters
Collingwood won all quarters against West Coast, Western Bulldogs against Hawthorn, Sydney against Richmond and St Kilda against Melbourne. This is the 17 time this has happened including two occasions where 5 teams have won all quarters in a single round.
Most 4-quarter wins in a round
5

in 1990 – Rnd 4
2000 – Rnd 18

4

1926 – Rnd 11
1944 – Rnd 11
1971 – Rnd 17
1986 – Rnd 19
1988 – Rnd 9
1992 – Rnd 20
1994 – Rnd 24
1996 – Rnd 7
1996 – Rnd 20
1997 – Rnd 16
2002 – Rnd 6
2004 – Rnd 1
2006 – Rnd 22
2007 – Rnd 16
2008 – Rnd 10*

In doing so Collingwood won their 4th four quarter game of the season (against Fremantle, Essendon, Geelong and West Coast) – matching the performances of 13 other seasons. Only three times have they won five games in a season winning all 4 quarters.
Most 4-quarter games won in a season – Collingwood

5 – 1901, 1971, 1991
4 – 1899, 1902, 1917, 1952, 1966, 1967, 1969, 1979, 1986, 1990, 1993, 1997, 2002, 2008*

Go Pies in 2008!!

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-06-04T05:21:12Z</dcterms:modified>

AFL Round 10 - Collingwood Vs West Coast

Wooohooo. 3 wins on the trot.. not only that, the last two have been by a combined tally of 186 points... I watched this game twice. Once on Friday night and caught the replay on Fox ( i was in a Hotel room). Of course this made me late for the day. What a pumping, the boys won every quarter and didn't slack off in the last. This was always a bit of an issue, we'd get 30 odd points ahead but not really build it into a big winning margin. well, we cerainly did that tonight...
Match Details

Saturday, May 31, 2008
MCG, 2.10pm AEST; crowd: 52,968
Conditions: Good
Weather: 17C, fine and sunny

1/4 time
1/2 time
3/4 time
Final

COL
5.5-35 (25)
12.8-80 (32)
19.10-124 (68)
27.11-173 (100)

WCE
1.4-10
7.6-48
8.8-56
10.13-73

Goals: Collingwood: Paul Medhurst 5.0, Dale Thomas 4, Leon Davis 3, Alan Didak 3, Dane Swan 2, Travis Cloke 2, Scott Pendlebury 2, Shannon Cox, Nick Maxwell, Shane O'Bree, Rhyce Shaw, Josh Fraser, Tarkyn Lockyer. West Coast: Quinten Lynch 3, Dean Cox 2, Beau Waters, Daniel Kerr, Josh Kennedy, Steven Armstrong, Ben McKinley.
Best: Collingwood: Dane Swan, Dale Thomas, Scott Pendlebury, Shane O'Bree, Travis Cloke, Rhyce Shaw, Alan Didak. West Coast: Dean Cox, Daniel Kerr, Brett Jones, Josh Kennedy, Quinten Lynch, Beau Wilkes, Will Schofield.
Umpires: Mathew James, Stefan Grun, Stuart Wenn.
Report:
Beau Waters (WCE) was cited for engaging in rough conduct against Shane O'Bree (Col) in Q4. Water's contact was assessed as negligent, medium impact and high, however his bad recent record increased the level to 270 demerit points and a two-match suspension with an early plea. I had been out ( watching Indiana Jones, no less) and came home to listen to the final quarter streamed via the AFL Website. I was cheering and carrying on. I turned up the sound for the Club song... Not only that, I then rushed upstairs to watch the game... Of course, i had to sit my way through a bloody Benny Hill repeat of a repeat of a repeat episode before the game kicked off... I had to do the silent yealling and cheering and singing the club song as the girls had all gone to bed... and there were plenty of cheering..

close to a parallel – at half-time the Pies led the Cats by 51 points – in 2006 in Round 8 at the MCG, it was 59 points difference 12.3 to 2.4, with Collingwood that night (May 20) winning by 102 points
Collingwood's 86-point win is their 4th-best of 214 games versus the Cats; only 102pts in 2006, 97pts in 1945 and 89pts in 1902 are better
also close to a parallel – TIM LANE noted on ABC 774 that in 1953 it was Collingwood who severed the string of Geelong's 23-straight victories – on Friday night it was the end of 12 successive wins by the Cats from last year's R22
The Magpies had 13 goalkickers for the match; an equal best by Collingwood – last time 1990-R16-SCG v Sydney – see Goals-most
50th DALE THOMAS (Collingwood, 2006-08) who in Q4 kicked Collingwood's 19th of the night and a contender for goal of the year
The Magpies amassed a staggering 85 tackles, 56 of which came in the first half as they turned the Cats into a side which bore no semblance at all to the one which had won 27 of its previous 28 matches.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-06-04T04:58:29Z</dcterms:modified>

AFL Round 8 - St Kilda Vs Collingwood

Woohoo another win.. a good hard tough win that might make the difference for the year. Anzac Day footy is here and what a day for the Pies... People whinge about how other clubs don't get to play on this special day and that the games are all one-sided... well, as the most-supported club ( from attendance figures of Clubs) Collingwood deserve such a day and it is always good to not only smash Essendon but to rack up a big score in doing so... Fantastic to see Medhurst and Cloke kicking a bag each (6 & 5 respectively) and Pendlebury and Co racking up possessions in the midfield like there is no tomorrow..
C'Mon boys, let's get some back-to-back wins...
Match Details

Geez, our continued inaccuracy costs us dearly. Not only that, after raising our hopes cruelly in Rnd 1, Rocca continues with his meagre return of possessions, let alone goals. I guess the only good thing to come out of it was that there is no possible way for me to watch this game on free-to-air TV. Certainly not live, not eve a delayed telecast or even a replay telecast at 1am which was the norm last year...
Match Details

He still tends to deliver the ball to where players "should be", not where they are going to be... there were a lot of kicks that were just out of reach or over the head of the leading players. Maybe I'm just dirty because he didn't come to Collingwood...
Match Details

Sunday, April 13, 2008
MCG, 2.10pm AEST, crowd: near 77,873
Conditions: Good
Weather: 18C, overcast

1/4 time
1/2 time
3/4 time
Final

CAR
6.0-36 (14)
10.2-62 (20)
12.6-78 (27)
17.9-111 (23)

COL
3.4-22
6.6-42
7.9-51
13.10-88

Goals: Carlton: Brendan Fevola 7.2, Brad Fisher 2, Bryce Gibbs, Richard Hadley, Setanta O'hAilpin, Eddie Betts, Nick Stevens, Darren Pfeiffer, Shaun Grigg, Kade Simpson. Collingwood: Nathan Brown 2, L Davis 2, Thomas 2, Didak, Medhurst, Pendlebury, Cloke, Swan, Clarke, Rocca.
Best: Carlton: Brendan Fevola, Marc Murphy, Bryce Gibbs, Jarrad Waite, Chris Judd, Heath Scotland, Nick Stevens, Bret Thornton. Collingwood: Ben Johnson, Dane Swan, Shane Wakelin, Martin Clarke, Rhyce Shaw.
Umpires: Stephen McBurney, Damien Sully, Scott Jeffery.
Reports:
Nick Stevens (Car) reported by umpire Scott Jeffery for striking Alan Didak (Col) in Q3. The Indians did pay well but one wonders what the result would have been if not for the Decisions against Hussey and Symonds in the second Innings. Seems the Indians got the result they wanted. Their whinging and veiled (and not-so-veiled) threatsd have resulted in the 50-50 calls going their way and also toned down the Aussie aggressions which is what they cannot handle.
I think calls about the end of an Aussie dominance is a bit far-fetched. One upset win does not make a great test side. Will Ishant Sharma follow the rest of his predessecors and get all hyped up and with pockets full of sponsorship cash forget to do all the things that got him there and spend time as another medoicre palyer living off the memoris of that performance... just ask Yuvraj Singh...
A few factors didn't help, Hayden's 11th hour omission, Tait's performance, the inability to bowl fast men for any lentgh of time due to over rates.... As i said, one win or a drawn series does not make champions.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-01-20T03:13:14Z</dcterms:modified>

Paper Tiger caves again...

It looks like the ICC is nothing but a paper tiger and is as useless as ever... They have caved in to the Indian Cricket teams petulant sulking and essentially killed Steve Bucknor's career just like the did with Darrell Hair. .Has no-one the balls to stand up to the BCCI?
Imagine if the situation was reversed. yeah, sure there would have been a lot of stuff printed about the umpiring decisions (and rightly so) but then the tour would have moved on without tit-for-tat suspensions, threats to call off the tour, the mass burning of effigies and all the ridiculous carry-on. What has been hidden was the fact that India could not last 70 overs despite the bad decisions... Had they held on for a draw, would all of this been so much of an issue. These are supposed to be professional players, yet an under-9's team would have handled that better.
The whole thing with the racism slur is just ridiculous. If "monkey" is not a racial slur, how come the only player ever, in both past and present players, called a monkey just happens to be the only player in the side that is black? I am of the opinion that Ponting has done the right thing by exposing it. Just as it was exposed and dealt with in the AFL, so now it should not be swept under the carpet but be dealt with in cricket.
Harbajan denies he said it but he has history which undermines his credibility. Indians are calling Ponting, Symonds and Hayden a liar but Harbajan, despite being caught before for saying it and warned no to say it again, must be believed. Everyone must learn that racism is not just white people calling other people of colour offensive names but refers to all people of any race, creed or colour. I myself, lost count of the times I was called "a white c**t" when I played football yet it was only my coach that was banned (and again, rightly so) for yelling a racist term. There is no place for racism anywhere, let alone on the field.
While the on-field action was regrettable, the mess afterwards was inexcusable, showing that the state of cricket is in a terrible state and I do not see it improving until the self-serving asian bloc of cricket boards are willing to put the game ahead of themselves.
That's why I am not interested in anything that the Indian Cricket team is involved in.....

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-01-09T01:07:17Z</dcterms:modified>

Another Porkie...

Pig's Bum he didn't

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-12-02T08:18:58Z</dcterms:modified>

Collingwood Magpies in 2007

Most pundits had all but written them off before the start of the season and certainly after key injuries to top players. But attitude and discipline will get you everywhere and they finished essentially third in the race for the AFL premiership.

Along the way they set all sorts of records and amazing stats...

Round 6 saw Collingwood hit the post an extraordinary SEVEN times – the last occasion seven was recorded was by Richmond against Fitzroy in the 1924-R4 match at Punt Road.

Round 7 saw Shane Wakelin kick his first goal for Collingwood in during his 125 games to that round

Collingwood won at the Gabba for the first time since 1995 (and i missed it)

Round 10 saw a crowd of 44,480, being the second-best home-and-away crowd to watch the Dockers

Round 11 at Stadium Australia saw a crowd of 64,222 being the 3rd-highest, behind the two best posted in 2003, 72,393 then 71,019

Round 18 saw the meeting closely bearing parallel with that played on May 12 at the MCG –
R07-MCG – Collingwood 17.17-119 v Carlton 14.11-95 – 24pts
R18-MCG – Collingwood 18.12-120 v Carlton 14.12-96 – 24pts

In round 18, he Magpies kicked 8.2-50, their best Q4 of this season and beat Carlton in four successive matches for the first time for more than 50 years, since 1953-55

Round 20 saw the Pies with 6.4 produced their best opening quarter of the season – it carried Collingwood to their 12th win of the year over Melbourne. Melbourne was goalless against the Pies in Q2 for the first time since 1990 at Waverley when Collingwood kicked 5.3 to the Demons 0.4 – the Magpies won that day as well

Round 21 saw the Magpies beat the Swans at the MCG for the first time since 1936

The Elimination Final against Sydney saw the best 1st quarter of the year kicking 6.5

The Semi-Final saw scores tied at the siren requiring extra-time to be played for only the second time in a League final under rules introduced following the draw between Collingwood and West Coast in the 1990 Qualifying Final at Waverley and the subsequent replay a week later. Collingwood beat West Coast at Subiaco for only the third time – last time was in 1992-R13, the other in 1989-R11

West Coast, in their 201st game at Subiaco, was held goalless in Q1 for the first time.

Collingwood is only the second side from the group finishing fifth-eighth to make it to a Preliminary Final.

We beat both Grand-Finalists from the last 2 years in the Finals.

3 AFL mark of the Year Weekly winners – Leon Davis, Josh Fraser and Anthony Rocca

2 AFL Goal of the Year Weekly Winners – Leon Davis twice ( although Dale Thomas was robbed only by a Boundary Umpire that was 20 metres away..)

It makes me proud to see my boys never giving in and battling it out until the final siren. Cheers to them all... you are winners in my book.
It was a game I loved to watch as i wasn't expecting them to win but had that glimmer of hope that they could... and they nearly did.
Go the Pies in 2008!! hopefully still with Bucks and maybe Judd

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-09-24T05:20:22Z</dcterms:modified>

Super Pies cruise through to the semis

COLLINGWOOD has set up an interstate semi-final showdown with West Coast after demolishing Sydney by 38 points on Saturday night in the second elimination final at the MCG. It was the third time the Pies have beaten the Swans this year, although this result presents as the most significant as it ensures the 2005 premiers and last year's Grand Finalists will not progress beyond the first week of finals for the first time since 2002.
After getting off to a commanding start, the game ebbed and flowed with the Swans mounting periodic challenges, and threatening to claim the momentum and steamroll the home side. But the Pies finished off in the same sterling fashion they started in, and with a five-goal final term sent the Swans packing 18.17 (125) to 13.9 (87) to move beyond the opening week of finals for the first time since 2003.
It was a stunning result for the side that was bundled out of last year's race by the Western Bulldogs in the opening week. With Nathan Buckley back and clearly enjoying his football, the Pies were a team-oriented and switched-on unit that systematically dismantled the formerly suffocating Swans.
While they didn't have a player worthy of criticism, it was midfielders Dane Swan and Scott Pendlebury who helped instigate the Pies' drive into attack, while forwards Anthony Rocca (six goals), Sean Rusling and Travis Cloke (three each) dominated the game. They set up with an impressive forward structure, with Rusling starting deep, Rocca midway up the 50 and Cloke at centre-half forward, while either Paul Medhurst or Leon Davis roamed dangerously.
It was a structure that worked, and their start was consequently set at a cracking pace. They held their biggest lead of the opening term – 31 points – as the quarter-time siren sounded. Rocca's performance was nothing short of heroic after the spearhead went off late in the second term with what appeared to be a serious knee complaint. But he reappeared with the team after the main break and went on to be the Pies' leading goalscorer. He had perhaps his best first term for the season with seven touches, five marks and two goals, while Alan Didak was explosive coming off the bench to pick up seven possessions and one goal.
With a convincing lead and an opposition that appeared out of sorts, the Pies entered the second term brimming with confidence, but the experienced finalists in the Swans again displayed their never-say-die attitude. The Swans lifted, and by scoring the first two goals of the term had culled the Pies' lead to under four straight kicks. But, the home side rose to their challenge and regained their ascendancy through Davis and Rusling. As the quarter see-sawed score-wise, the Swans became more convincing regarding their pressure. They kept the Pies honest in the midfield and drew themselves closer with inside 50s, and the result had them within 16 points as the term wore down.
A pair of unfortunate events had the Pies' lead reduced to just 10 at half time. Just before Jude Bolton popped through the goal that settled the half, Rocca sent a scare through the Pies' camp when he hyper-extended his knee. The game seemed set to continue to go Sydney's way when O'Loughlin opened the scoring with a goal just after the re-start in the third quarter but the Pies' defensive pressure stepped up and forced the Swans into costly turnovers. This eventually paid dividends as Collingwood put together five goals to one for the remainder of the term.
With Rocca clearly forgetting his sore knee, he again stood up and made the third quarter his, while Rusling continued to present and Swan started to find plenty of the ball. The difference was 28 points with a term to go, and with the sun soon to set on one team's 2007 seasons, the respective huddles consisted of plenty of intense discussion. Whatever Buckley said to his troops worked a treat, as they refused to concede any ground to the Swans in the deciding term, and consequently won a trip to Perth to meet the wounded Eagles.
COLLINGWOOD: 6.5, 8.9, 13.12, 18.17 (125)
SYDNEY: 1.4, 7.5, 9.8, 13.9 (87)
GOALS - Collingwood: Rocca 6, Rusling 3, Cloke 3, Didak, Pendlebury, Davis, Swan, Buckley, Medhurst
Sydney: O'Loughlin 4, Davis 2, Malceski 2, Kirk, Fosdike, Schneider, J. So, if both the Kangaroos and Collingwood win, the Magpies’ winning margin would need to be at least 84 points greater than the Kangaroos’ for the Magpies to slip ahead of the team from Arden Street on the ladder.
In terms of the round 22 fixture, Hawthorn faces a tough trip to Sydney to take on the Swans on Sunday, while the Kangaroos will clash with the Western Bulldogs at the Telstra Dome, also on Sunday. So, provided Collingwood wins on Friday night, Magpie fans will no doubt be barracking hard for both Sydney and the Bulldogs on Sunday.

Below are the possible scenarios for Collingwood:

Will finish 4th if…

Collingwood beats Adelaide
Sydney beats Hawthorn
Western Bulldogs beat Kangaroos
or

Sydney beats Hawthorn
Kangaroos beat Western Bulldogs
Collingwood beats Adelaide and its winning margin is at least 84 points more than the Kangaroos’ winning margin over the Western Bulldogs.
Will finish 5th if…

Collingwood beats Adelaide
Hawthorn beats Sydney
Western Bulldogs beat Kangaroos
or

Sydney beats Hawthorn
Kangaroos beat Western Bulldogs
Collingwood beats Adelaide but does not exceed the Kangaroos’ winning margin over the Western Bulldogs by at least 84 points.
Will finish 6th if…

Hawthorn beats Sydney
Kangaroos beat Western Bulldogs
Collingwood beats Adelaide but does not exceed the Kangaroos’ winning margin over the Western Bulldogs by at least 84 points.
or

Adelaide beats Collingwood

So much for predicting Collingwood in the bottom four this year!!

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-08-28T07:51:24Z</dcterms:modified>

He's Back!

Buckley is set to take the field this week for the Pies.

Big game against the Swan's coming up.
